Upstream is proof that a concept doesn’t always have to be very complex, nor its execution mind-blowing, to result in a beautiful, exciting book. This is a book that both documents and is about documentation: the content has come about in a way different from most monographies. The main part of this book is made up of photographs of photographs, always with the same wooden desk as a background. Photographer Ari Marcopoulos took these photos with his telephone to give an idea of the prints he wanted to select for an exhibition. Thanks to this consistently applied, simple approach the book evokes an experience that feels very contemporary: the look behind the scenes, the work-in-progress. These images are interspersed with film stills, for yet another experience of images in print. Somehow the material doesn’t seem suited to a book, and yet it works. In terms of its form, this book has something of the sketchbook about it, reinforcing the idea of a glimpse behind the scenes. As does the simple crepe spine. The type of material normally hidden behind a hard cover, but which here is left visible. An interesting project that has clearly been influenced by new media (i.e.: the smartphone), and which convincingly translates this influence into the sphere of a book.
