In this charming book – a gift from the Historisch Genootschap Roterodamum historical society to all Year 5 school students in Rotterdam – illustration is powerfully used as a language. The jury have seen quite a lot of fold-out leporello covers, but seldom as effectively implemented as here. The illustration that runs across the entirety of the exterior shows the hustle and bustle of Rotterdam by day, with the city by night as a surprise on the inside, with very different things highlighted. The illustrations also steal the show in the interior, with the colour palette – consisting of two fluorescent inks, one Pantone and black – beautifully holding everything together. The balance between text and image is good, the tone of both is light and displays an appropriate sense of humour. The font feels a little formal and impersonal; we wondered whether this was the most fitting choice. As a publishing concept, the jury was impressed by the interesting, generous idea of giving a copy to every Year 5 pupils in Rotterdam as a kind of ‘promotional gift’, but aimed more at informing than impressing.
