Love of the small and the close are bound up in the very fibres of this fragile, intimate book. From the thin, 52-gramme paper with a natural look and soft touch, to the Japanese binding and the small format – everything about this project breathes sensitive attention to detail. The photos fit in a tradition of romantic nature photography but with a subtle twist, which stops the whole becoming clichéd. The black-and-white illustrations, printed in duotone, lend the entire book a classic look. Nevertheless, thanks in part to the papers chosen, the binding and the absence of page numbers, this book makes a fresh, contemporary impression. The Japanese binding technique is used to good effect – with photos that often run onto the next page, giving the reader the sensation of standing in the middle of the landscape depicted. An attractive visual rhythm is created by the interplay of images of different sizes – from single pictures that fill a whole spread to combinations of images across the page with smaller images alongside them. The printing and lithography have been carried out with great skill: achieving contrast on this paper demands the right amount of ink. A disadvantage of this can be that some images that contain a great deal of subtle detail can ‘clog up’, a pitfall skilfully avoided here. The cover is also attractive, with the front and rear boards forming a photographic diptych and the title and author’s name appearing only on the spine. A modest plea for the gentle, vulnerable and poetic.
