It is clear that making this complex book must have been a real process; a voyage of discovery, the outcome of which would have been uncertain before it began. In her photographs, Markus captures the shadows behind canvas in such a way that the image almost becomes duotone: black shapes on a blue background. Some Things Bleak translates this way of working into an experiment with different inks and paper types in various combinations. The final result is a celebration of the interplay between different makers and craftspeople: from the artist and the designer to the printer and binder. The different types of papers and inks beautifully highlight the materiality and atmosphere of what can be seen in the photographs. Coated paper, for example, echoes the sheen of the blue canvas sheets, and transparent paper with an ‘afterimage’ on the inside reinforces the ideas of shadows and shining through. The binding – separate sheets bound in a hard cover – gives this the feel of an old-fashioned artist’s portfolio. The reader is left feeling a little like an outsider; the totality of the book being rather self-contained. However, the jury wholeheartedly applaud the experimentation and far-reaching collaboration so evident in this book.
