Within the framework of the European Natura 2000 network, which aims to retain and repair biodiversity, in On the ground among the animals Marina Caneve raises the question of the position of man in nature. She devotes particular attention to the infrastructure between Natura 2000 zones, such as ecoducts, and measures to ensure that and monitor how wildlife uses this infrastructure. An extremely topical theme at a time when the humancentric attitude towards nature is coming under scrutiny.
On the ground among the animals has the feel of a hybrid book, occupying a space somewhere between academic publication and photobook. This corresponds to the book’s contents – in as far as Caneve attempts to lay a foundation for visual ecocriticism: the visual material itself forms the narrative analysis of this material. The choice of uncoated paper supports this more formal than creative use of images. This can have an alienating effect on the reader, but the jury appreciated the gutsiness of this choice in the service of the content. The black paper section on which surveillance photos are printed in white ink is a surprising addition, which effectively puts across the sensation of being spied on. All-in all, the design is modest, clear and serves the content; this feels like a complete book.
