The question of who is to blame for the damage being done to the climate, and who bears responsibility for attempting to remedy this, has been echoing through society for some time now. Where some work on campaigns to raise awareness, highlighting the role of people as consumers with influence, others call for resistance against the system and the big polluters. Sorry, jouw schuld is a visual essay composed from images in the public domain and quotations from six editorial articles that have appeared in various media. Through the juxtaposition of opinions and the array of photos without any other clarification than conscious picture editing, Midas Boering does justice to the cacophonous experience of entering into this discourse, and being a part of this era.

The book is drenched in a need to give a voice to a lived experience, as if attempting to democratise a social issue. This is also expressed in the book-as-object: if there is one book among this selection that proves that anyone can make a book, it is Sorry, jouw schuld. The two hundred A4 sheets were printed at a copy shop; two stacked, flat-stapled book blocks have been combined using a grey linen cap. A screen-printed linen band holds these two parts of the book together in a natural way, and the result is telling. When leafing through the book, either a plane or a bus appears on the fore edge, depending whether you are leafing forwards or backwards. This is a playful, well-executed nod to air travel as a now emblematic component of the discussion of individual responsibility for climate recovery. All in all, what we see here is a daring, successful experiment.
