The exhibition As far as I know, by painter Caja Boogers is recorded with extreme comprehensiveness in this book of the same title. In the exhibition Boogers explores his Indonesian roots by painting 92 works based on four archival and two family photographs. In the exhibition the paintings are spread across two walls and can all be viewed at once, revealing the motifs and rhymes they share, as well as the variations and nuances that make up the whole.
It is no mean feat to successfully translate this exhibition set-up and the way it is intended to be experienced into a book. In As far as I know, this has nevertheless been achieved. Each of the 92 paintings is included in the book in three different ways, meaning that the reader can experience the paintings in three different ways while leafing through. The book opens with a full-page detail from each painting, followed by three effective photographs of the exhibition in situ, and closes with a visual table of contents for the book which again presents the works, this time in a grid formation, three by three. By way of an encore, the works (all except one) are also printed on the inside of the American-style folding jacket. All-in all, the viewer of the book, like the viewer in the exhibition space, is able to zoom in and out and make cross-connections at will.
As far as I know, is distinguished by clear choices. The paper used for the cover is coated on one side and contrasts pleasantly with the uncoated interior, as does the thin paper used for the dust jacket in comparison to the very thick greyboard it surrounds. The choice of wide margins for the text section and the pictorial table of contents lend the book a serenity that allows the paintings to be appreciated to the full.
