Ten portraits of young Chinese women, photographed against a blazing red background and printed on glossy paper, cut across this carefully composed photobook. Here Yee Ling Tang, a resident of the Netherlands since she was three, pays homage to the four generations in her family: her grandparents in Hong Kong, her parents, her own generation, and her own daughter.
With its soft cover this is a book to leaf through, and in photos small and large (all printed on matt paper) we are shown China as it is at home and China as it is in the throes of modernization. In this book the individualism and the collective spirit, the old and the new, speak for themselves.
The panel were unanimous in praising the book’s balanced layout and in particular the way the photographs have been used.
