This piece of writing is yet another of the many much-lauded publications of the small non-profit-seeking publishing house Huis Clos, which has for years been bringing out work by maverick authors and artists. The text by author Gerard Kornelis van het Reve (he later simplified his name) dates from 1967, when he was taken to court charged with blasphemy for having depicted God in the form of an ass, and is a written pleading to the court. This is a limited edition and the first self-standing publication of the text.
A handsome, slim volume, with a separate explanatory text by poet, essayist and classicist Piet Gerbrandy, makes subtle play with the colours blue and black on the cover and endpapers. This alternation of blue and black also returns in the typography of the titles and headings. The panel were unanimous in voting this a superbly produced little book.
