Ever since they first appeared on the Dutch market in 1953, the Little Golden Books have been a fixture in the world of children’s publishing. Here as elsewhere, the originally American format of simple, richly illustrated stories in a hard cover with a golden spine became a success story that generations of children have grown up with.
Now Uitgeverij Rubinstein has breathed new life into the series, joining forces with Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad to bring out Het Kerstfeest der Dieren in a print run of 45,000. To the judges this is a handsome tribute to the original concept and a genuinely ‘cosy’ little book. With its middle-class mentality, its cartoon-like pictures and the golden, curly-wurly typography of the title, it all fits together perfectly.
