Sometimes content and form coincide utterly, as here. A book that everyone agreed on, and which was very swiftly and without reservation elected one of the Best Dutch Book Designs.
This is a signed edition of 420 created by stencilling on nicely stiff paper. The book is the work of Sigrid Calon, and consists of abstract forms placed rhythmically, one to each recto, with tremendous chromatic power and opulence and nothing more than a subtle number above each one and below it the two, three and sometimes four small blobs of the colours from which each work is built up. A book without text, it reads easily, with work that displays some extraordinarily disciplined and dedicated research.
There is a cheerful, sturdy cover which rolls open, as it were, to reveal a book block with an open spine, subtly sewn with four red and four white threads, beautifully positioned. A book you can’t help loving straight away.
