This overview of recent work by Marnix Goossens is intended as a portfolio, the cover folded round the pages like a double wrapper. The pages themselves are of high gloss paper so as to approach the original prints as closely as possible. There is little to distract one from the photographs, which is also why the text has been separated from the images: the title page does not appear until page 17. Even the front cover is devoid of text, the title appearing only on the spine. Here we immediately see the intensity of the first photograph: the photographer observes, and we observe with him. Alienation in the ordinary: this is what catches one’s gaze. Slightly absurd, sometimes, and verging on kitsch. The order in which the photographs appear also directs one’s gaze and creates surprises. Good decisions.
