The now famous librettos published by De Nederlandse Opera have appeared among the Best Dutch Book Designs before: in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2003. That has not proved an obstacle to their being selected again for 2006. Once again they are self-standing publications, and this time they come in a very substantial, modern and business-like design – just as the performances themselves were very modern in their design. Much more than in previous years, a series image has been devised for them. This features a wonderful colour gradient from spine to spine, from bright pink through bright yellow to a soft brown, creating an unexpectedly exciting overall colour scheme. On the front cover a simple black-and-white photograph likewise dissolves into the background colour. The interiors are as always uncluttered and legible, simply interspersed with beautiful colour photography. Without making heavy budgetary demands the designer has again come up with something new, and it is a nice bit of work.
