This year the designer of LAND is represented by several books. The rhythm in the layout of this entirely textless photobook is extraordinarily clever. Double-page spreads are split into two halves. The designer’s role has been prominent, both with the photos and with the design of the book itself. Picture sharpness is perfect. Reading all this, you’d think an elastic band would be out of place, but on the contrary it is in no way obtrusive. Double-page spreads are bisected by framing gaps or unexpectedly turn out to be two different photos: an exercise for the eye. The printer has given a great deal of care to the lithography. Beautiful mise en page, tremendous uniformity. All choices contribute to a meaningful whole.
