In 2008 Uitgeverij Podium launched a new literary periodical dedicated to the strip cartoon and named after the spiritual father of the graphic novel, Will Eisner. The idea behind this new publication was to give the genre both encouragement and a platform. Cover illustrations are by a different artist for each issue, but the basic layout is unvarying: an A5 format paperback with the title reversed out in the top bar and the names of the authors/artists in a bar along the bottom. The designers do little more than present the stories, but for each new author/artist in an issue they think up a new way of presenting them, adding to the variety by drawing on an apparently infinite source of fonts and characters. To the panel this was a fresh and uninhibited series, a welcome addition not just for the literary magazine establishment but also for graphic design in general.
