The panel fell en bloc for the singular charm of this little self-published book. The dead animals and birds photographed by Engelhard, all of them roadkill, are at once breathtakingly beautiful and heartbreaking. They are presented with no fuss in a handsome small book of four gatherings separated by pages with prose or verse contributions and a sheet of dark brown paper. In the past Engelhard has photographed mattresses discarded in the street, mountains of rubbish, and stuff that has washed ashore. Endowing the lost object with a life of its own, she indirectly displays the pollution of nature. The distance created by her aesthetic creates in turn an alienating effect, especially as the animals are photographed against a white background.
