Not long ago the Design Museum in Den Bosch received two substantial and important gifts: the ceramics collection of designer and interior architect Benno Premsela (1920-1997) and over 250 jewellery pieces from the collection of the museum’s past director Yvònne Joris (1950-2013). This was cause for celebration in the shape of an exhibition and an accompanying two-part publication in one volume, designed by Haller Brun. The publisher was keen to offer both publications separately, so the designers opted for two cahiers. For the museum, these are presented together in one cover under the title Show Yourself. The duality of the two cahiers is elaborated in black and white paper, smooth as opposed to rough cover board, and a straight-cut fore-edge for the Premsela cahier contrasting with an untrimmed and therefore pointed fore-edge for the Joris book. The way the cover is folded so as to gather the two cahiers together is an ingenious reaction to this. Large silver page numbers are placed brazenly in the middle of the page in the Joris, but on closer inspection this turns out not to be an empty gesture: this way they form an effective and attractive divider between the English and Dutch texts. The play with black, white and the silver overprinting of the all-embracing cover produces a fine contrast against which the colour reproductions sparkle brilliantly. And the gems in the Joris cahier can be picked straight off the page.

Special features: These are two publications which are sold both separately and together. In the latter case the work on Premsela is inserted at the heart of that on Joris, the whole being held together by a dust jacket. The book on Premsela is bound with white thread and the fore-edge is trimmed. Texts are printed in black on white paper and the cover, coated on one side, is bound in with the coated side innermost. The book on Joris is bound with black thread and the fore-edge is untrimmed. The texts are printed in silver on black paper. The cover, again coated on one side only, is bound in with the coated side outermost.
