In Le Soleil, we meet the designer as designer, editor, printer and publisher. This cahier contains a personal photo archive recording the meeting of pen friends Ilse and Elhadji (in Senegal, 1986). The semi-analogue, three-coloured Risograph printing does justice to the photos, while avoiding the tendency towards sensationalism that this technique can be associated with. The alternating colour and black-and-white photos, as well as the sporadic empty pages, are proof not only of a well-considered composition, but also create a convincing flow through the book. The addition of a black-and-white contact sheet is the icing on the cake. The format is good and the Singer-sewn binding appropriate. All in all, this large, slim book is a wonderful home for this modest selection of highly personal photos.
