Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk design fabrics, furniture and other utilitarian products. They graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2000, since when they have shared a studio. Outside their work, too, they are partners, but it was only comparatively recently that they launched their joint brand, Joost + Kiki.
Here their work is collected together in a solid board-bound book with a front cover for each. Each is introduced by one of their lecturers at the Academy; the two lecturers also turn out to be a couple. At the heart of the book Joost and Kiki appear together in a photo along with their four technicians. The image reminds us that it is hard work turning a creative idea into an innovative product.
The panel were unable to agree on the horizontal rules that link the text pages to the two covers. Was this a case of the urge to decorate going too far? Yes, absolutely. No, what’s wrong with it?
For the rest the panel were happy to let themselves be carried along by the whirling playfulness that characterizes the work presented as much as it does this book. There is no better proof that this is a well-made book. It is absolutely of today. And absolutely Eindhoven.
