Visitors to the exhibition ‘Not Just A Fair’ were given the opportunity to enter into a conversation with dot matrix printer Scott, who then printed out his own interpretation of the conversation. (Not) Jammed is a selection of what visitors, in collaboration with Scott, came up with during the three days of the exhibition. The result is an extremely successful hybrid form between book and dot matrix print-out. Thanks to the Japanese binding, the scan of the continuous paper runs across the fore edges, giving the impression that only the three staples are preventing the original, metres-long document from spontaneously unfolding. (Not) Jammed is an example of how a strong publication can be created using simple techniques and materials.
In terms of typography, the automatically generated lines on the sheets, which appear seemingly randomly in meandering waves and blocks, create a poetic sensation. The depictions, fields and texts printed on the sealed insides of the sheets create an almost unnoticed play with depth on the outsides. Once noticed, this stresses that the ‘continuous paper’ in this book is just an illusion, and a certain alienation arises in relation to the object. This all but guarantees a sensation of becoming jammed in your experience with this small book – making its title even more apposite.
