This layered book on Diana Scherer’s eight-year project Interwoven reflects her working method and themes: she is a pioneer in ‘biotechnological’ art, probing the relationship between humans and nature. The various different paper types are a good medium for the close-ups, illustrations, overviews and text sections. The attention to colour is evident throughout the book in the tints chosen for the paper types, print colours and lithography. The many beige and brown colours provide a rich ground for the green that leaps off the pages. The cover, finally, is characteristic of the book as a whole with its simple design, which suits the content. The upper half of the jacket folded in the American style is folded outwards, instead of inwards, bearing text the letters of which interweave; on the lower half, one of Scherer’s works is printed, continuing under the title – as if underground.
The coming together of art and research makes Interwoven an intriguing book to leaf through in wonder. The choice of a paper containing wood (Holmen) arouses our curiosity about what the book will look like in a few years’ time – which is of course entirely in line with its theme of natural processes.
