Books set apart by the combination of great design and commissioning with high-quality lithography, printing and bindings. The jury assessment takes place at the end of January.

All aspects of the Dutch graphic industry are represented in the selection of the Best Dutch Book Designs. The selection process rests on three pillars:

jury assessment in late January (submissions in December) with the announcement in March

the design and production of the catalogue for that year’s selection

the exhibition in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum in the autumn, where the catalogue is presented. The Best Dutch Book Designs are then shown at various locations in the Netherlands and abroad.

To inspire new generations of young designers, since 2016 the selection of The Best Dutch Book Designs has also involved a student jury. Six young apprentice designers choose their own selection and create a catalogue. Their selection is included in the exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum.

A brief history

With a history that stretches all the way back to 1926 the annual selection of the Best Dutch Book Designs is Europe’s oldest such event. That is not to say there have been no interruptions. We distinguish three periods: 1925-32, 1948-71 and from 1986 up to and including the present.

The first keurcollectie (choice selection), as the collection of the fifty best-produced books in the Netherlands was initially known, was an initiative of the then Nederlandsch Verbond van Boekenvrienden (NVB) (Netherlands Federation of Friends of the Book), and in particular the designer S.H. de Roos. That initial period was brought to an end by the slump and the economic malaise of the thirties. Annual selections resumed in 1948 and continued under the auspices of the CPNB until 1971, when it became impossible any longer to find the money for a catalogue: the most important and tangible vehicle for the contest.

When Henk Kraima became director of Stichting CPNB in 1986 he embarked on a campaign for the return of the Best Dutch Book Designs. An annual competition, and the impetus it would give to demonstrating developments in the constantly self-reinventing field of industrial design in printing and publishing, now found itself with sufficient support in publishing, the printing industry and related cultural institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum. Thanks also to financial support from the ministry of Welfare, Health & Culture, after fifteen years’ absence it was again possible to present a new selection of the Best Dutch Book Designs – once again under the auspices of the CPNB.

When government funding ended, it was decided that in 1998 the contest should be operated by a separate foundation, which would make it possible to seek sponsoring.

In 2020, the CPNB decided to shift its policy focus towards reaching readers, which meant that an annual election primarily aimed at the trade rather than the public no longer aligned with its goals. At the end of 2021, De Best Verzorgde Boeken decided to part ways with the CPNB. In 2024, the foundation found a new home at Allard Pierson, the museum and knowledge institute for the heritage collections of the University of Amsterdam.

Funding

Today the Best Dutch Book Designs is partly funded by Fonds Pictoright, Igepa Nederland and L. van Heek Textiles and from 2021 till 2026 also by ASF Goede Doelen Fonds.

Mission

The Foundation’s mission is in the widest sense to promote the importance and to further the interests of qualitatively excellent book design and production from the Dutch industry.

Vision

A strong and sustainable position for the Dutch physical book as a cultural and graphic medium, recognised and appreciated both at home and abroad.

The board

The board of the foundation consists of:
Chairman: Madeleine van Lennep, former director BNO
Treasurer: Jesse Muller, director Jesse Presse
Board member: Martijn Kicken, advisor NPN Printing

The board does not receive any remuneration for their work.

The Best Dutch Book Designs Intro Every year, The Best Dutch Book Designs celebrates the best products of the graphic industry in the Netherlands: 33 books made with heart and …

["post-2","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","no-post-thumbnail

About - De Best Verzorgde Boeken

<meta property="og:description" content="The Best Dutch Book Designs Intro Every year, The Best Dutch Book Designs celebrates the best products of the graphic industry in the Netherlands: 33 books made with heart and ...
