Toneelschuur 50

Is it a sign of the economic recovery of the past couple of years? The panel observed that the jubilee book is back: there is once again money for something to be cautiously celebrated. What’s striking is that ostentation and bling are often exchanged for critical reflection. The great thing about Toneelschuur 50 is that the jubilee theme is presented with subtlety: a dry as dust but very powerful typographic cover, which with its gold foil number is a comment on the fact of the jubilee rather than a trumpeting thereof – how could it be otherwise for a platform for ‘theatrical activism’ established in the turbulent year of revolution 1968? A nice touch is that the reversed blind stamping of the jubilee number on the cover inside is only legible unreversed when the cover itself is opened and it appears between the narrow space of the short dust jacket and the first page. The exercise in understatement in the jacket contrasts nicely with Suze Swarte’s strong picture editing inside, which in turn is nicely balanced thanks to the robust typography.
