This illustrated version of Renate Dorrestein’s novel (The Darkness that Divides Us), first published in 2003, became a project for designer Brigitte Slangen and illustrator Sylvia Weve, who also did the picture editing. What is exciting is how innovatively and freely the illustrations in the text help convey and support the narrative. The cover is dark, echoing the darkness in the title, while the typography of the title itself symbolizes the separation to which it refers, as do the handsome endpapers with their graphic representation of lighted windows in the dark. The way in which typography and illustration are interwoven in the interior is both subtle and effective. The usual matt laminate has been avoided so that the quality of the paper used for the dust jacket is tangible. The text stock is perhaps slightly too thick, but because the book is into its cover – unusual for a novel published in a numbered edition – it still opens nice and flat. This is the exceptional result of a very clearly successful collaboration between illustrator and graphic designer.
