As in Maktak and Gasoline, in Anastasiia – She Folds Her Memories Like a Parachute a love story and the present geopolitical situation come together. Photographer Christian van der Kooy and his beloved Anastasiia – a student from Kiev – communicate through photography (van der Kooy) and texts and Skype screenshots (Anastasiia). The book itself presents Anastasiia’s perspective, following how she puts her relationship with both her country and her beloved into words and images. Designer Rob van Hoesel weaves the perspectives of van der Kooy and Anastasiia into the greater story of the Ukraine of the Russian annexation, the accompanying war of information and the Ukrainian people’s search for their place and identity in an unpredictable and rapidly changing geopolitical context. The parallel streams of van der Kooy’s documentary photos and Anastasiia’s informal images are reproduced in immaculate full colour and an earthy reddish orange respectively. Once again an insert offers contextual information. The supple soft cover with cloth spine and self-ends reinforces the sense of intimacy evoked by the strong image on the front.
